Good result to the IA investigation and reasonable punishment by the Chief to set the tone to other officers. This officer had a clean record till now; this punishment is a warning and next time it won't be. But the statement about DA pushing charges against the mother; why? Does the DA seriously believe a mother defending her 7yo assaulted the officer? Wonder what the DA thought about the daughter who tried to calm her mother down being arrested?

The officer went off the rails with they "why not" question when the mother was telling hiim that the man couldnt put his hands on her son. After that it was a pretty good textbook case in how not to deal with the police. In any police interaction you can either escalate or deescalate the situation. I would have cuffed the younger girl in the black, maybe the girl in the pink. not the mom. Then again, I would have been questioning the white guy to see if he need to go to jail first. Keeping the family at a distance so I could have that interview.

Cpl Joshua Caldwell That's why the police should be trying to deescalating situations instead of tweaking highly emotional people. You take someone who is likely highly emotional and then start goading them instead of deescalating you can almost predict the increase in the chance of the person blowing a gasket.

Given to perception of the police in certain communities it wouldn't surprise me if that person was already thinking they were not going to get help. Then when the officer showed up and started taking like he did, she probably quickly understood that there would be no justice forthcoming for her child. Image that as a parent? Ouch.

thats why I said he went off the rails with the "why not" comment. He needed to control and relax her early, then get her away from the other guy. She was irrational at the start.

Cpl Joshua Caldwell - Exactly. That would seem to be a basic skill requirement for an officer. They are constantly dealing with people who are likely having extraordinary bad days for one reason or another. It's tough to deal with people who are highly emotional. It is an area I imagine where a police officer has an opportunity to do something really good for someone or turn their day very bad, just though how the officer approaches the situation.
