I do not understand the mental illness defense. If someone is intent on committing grievous bodily harm I don't care if he is sane, or as mad as a hatter.

Imagine someone pleading to save the life of a rabid dog that has already bitten many. He's rabid, put him down.

That's what happens when you bring a bat and attempt to assault innocent people. The Police did nothing wrong. They were protecting innocent people from a imminent threat.

I fully agree...I just hate that now they're going to be made out as the bad guys. The only way this story would have had a better ending is if a soccer mom was legally carrying concealed and did the shooting.

I point to critical pieces of evidence as stated by the mother, lawyer and writer of the article:

From the lawyer: “The story that he’s threatening people, or running away, that he was any sort of danger, she said that doesn’t make any sense compared to the guy she knows and his personality.”

From the article writer: "Hernandez was granted a temporary restraining order against her son in February of 2013. The court order also forced Schiltz to move out of the house, according to court records."

From the mother: “I always had great hope for my son, but my hope died when he died”
