As a Christian I find this to be an insult to my intelligence. Atheists are usually very firm in their convictions. And as such they stand virtually 0% chance of conversion to a different belief system. And they have every right to believe as they wish. As a Christian I was taught not to, if you will pardon the expression, "Throw pearls before swine". Not that we think Atheists are swine, but rather that swine would just trample the pearls. In today's terms, it's just a waste of time and effort. We should be putting our efforts into sharing our faith with those who are receptive. SMSgt Minister Gerald A. SMSgt Minister Gerald A. "Doc" Thomas - Doc, I've always admired the way you approach issues. My response to PFC Roger Goff was based on his comment that atheists were leaches, and only here to antagonize Christians.

Doc, I'm afraid I don't have your patience, and responded to that remark in kind. I apologize for dragging you into it.

Captain Prickett. I tried to allow for your beliefs. I thought I was being accommodating to your views. I attempted to give you a way out of discrediting my beliefs. But you explanations only served to convince me that Athiesm had but one purpose, and that was to prove my beliefs were invalid. I'm not interested in trying to disprove or change your beliefs. But If you are only going to continue to tell me that I'm wrong then I consider you to be an antagonist. This is me trying to be civil, open-minded and understanding.

PFC Roger Goff - like I pointed out, Christians believe that it is fine to try to convert atheists, but if atheists were to do the same, it's somehow unacceptable. That's hypocrisy.

You asked me direct questions, and I answered them. I did not attack your religion or beliefs until you made a comment about leaches and dependent on the faithful for our sustenance. In my case, that's somewhat true, as I'm an attorney, and I have far more Christians as divorce clients and criminal defense clients than I have atheist clients, even taking into consideration the ratio in the population.

If I were really trying to deconvert you, I would tell you to read the Bible, cover to cover, and study it. It's the most effective way of convincing a Christian to leave their faith.

Admittedly I lost my cool and went on the attack. This is a frustrating subject matter for myself, and possibly for you as well. I'm sorry that I took my frustration out on you that way Captain Prickett.

I have read the entire Bible and studied much of it at length. I have not been dissuaded in any way by doing so.

I still don't understand the subject of Atheism. But maybe I am just a little bit closer.

I personally try not to be judgemental of someone's religious preference, it's their beliefs and I don't have a right to criticize them for it.

Treat others the way you would like to be treated is a clear expression of the so-called Golden Rule. I have found that actions speak much louder than words. I fought God and HIS messengers for nearly 31 years. Brow-beating and berating rarely accomplishes anything other than further entrenching the closely guarded beliefs of the listeners.
Over my first few decades, I had Bible thumpers and materialistic-solutions devotes and professors lecture me in belittling ways to turn me to their side.
The more I have studies the Bible and the closer I have gotten to God, the more I have learned that doing and listening to the heart felt concerns of others are much more important in building relationships and helping others.
I have tried to do for others what I would like done for myself and to rejoice with those who rejoice [as opposed to being envious] and mourn with those who mourn Capt Gregory Prickett.
Thanks for alerting me SMSgt Minister Gerald A. Thomas.

This is very sage advice LTC. Treating others with empathy and respect will enable you to live a more peaceful and happier life. And you are right. Browbeating people gets nowhere. Unfortunately, most politicians have not learned this lesson.
