SN Greg Wright Many born and raised in the USA fail to understand basic concepts of what is and is not a right, at least she is trying to reconcile it. All of the main points made in the article are good points about gun ownership in America.
Our freedom from Britain was taken by force. It was taken at the point of a sword and with the barrel of a gun. Another big difference between India taking its freedom from Britain and ours, not mentioned in the article is that the colonies here were mostly comprised of immigrants from Europe. India was not. So the Indian culture was established as opposed to imported. Additionally, perhaps Britain learned something from the American revolution and disarmed their subjects so that they wouldn't have the means to rise up against them as we did.
Self defense is an obvious reason to own a gun. In many cases shots won't even need to be fired as the mere implication of being shot is enough to turn some criminal elements to easier prey. I am a firm believer in better to have and not need than to need and not have. The caveat to any gun ownership is training. From the range to the maintenance, if one is not familiar with the operation of the weapon, then they are more likely to injure themselves than anything else.
As for sport, it is just fun to go out and shoot. I have a .22LR Walther PPK that is just for fun. I like to take it to the range because I can put hundreds of rounds through it without breaking the bank. I enjoy shooting it is relaxing. My wife and I are preparing a move to Tennessee, and I am looking forward to going hunting when I move up there. Not because I need to, but because A)deer is yummy, and B) combines camping, hiking and shooting into one trip.

Credit to the author, she appears to have made a serious effort to keep her mind open during the entirety of her visit.

My wife was much the same as her when she immigrated from the Philippines and remembers a time there at night you either were in your home or never seen again. She never wants to live under that again and we are well protected here. She shoots as well or better than me now.

Good for her! We Americans are unique in our ability to defend ourselves, our homes & families. People from other cultures need to learn "pacifist" & "victim" are not the same.

They criticize us for our firearms and our constant fight to keep them and then when shit falls apart in their world, they call us to save them. It is ok if they do not want to be well versed in firearms but don't criticize us and then call for help.

My second wife was a naturalized citizen from Cebu, PI. She did not like my guns but did support my right to keep them. Like many from the PI's she preferred bladed weapons.
