Are you sure? When I was in the California guard, the adjutant general was a a two-star position that goes back and forth between Army and Air National Guard. He may have been a deputy adjutant as a one-star general.

LTC (Join to see) - I guess I was wrong, I thought for sure I had read that somewhere... He actually enlisted as a private but then got a commission because he was already a licenced pilot. Anyway, the following is from his IMDB page and Wikipedia...

He was the first movie star to enter the service for World War II, joining a year before Pearl Harbor was bombed. He was initially refused entry into the Army Air Force because he weighed 5 pounds less than the required 148 pounds, but he talked the recruitment officer into ignoring the test. He eventually became a Colonel (active duty) and then Brigadier General in the United States Air Force Reserve, and earned the Air Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Croix de Guerre and 7 battle stars. In 1959, he served in the Air Force Reserve, before retiring as a brigadier general.

On February 20, 1966, Brigadier General Stewart flew as a non-duty observer in a B-52 on an Arc Light bombing mission during the Vietnam War. He refused the release of any publicity regarding his participation, as he did not want it treated as a stunt, but as part of his job as an officer in the Air Force Reserve.

After 27 years of service, Stewart retired from the Air Force on May 31, 1968

Only two former actors outranked him: John Ford was an actor before becoming a director, and he became rear admiral in the U.S. Naval Reserve. President Ronald Reagan became the U.S. Commander-in-Chief.

LTC (Join to see) - You're welcome sir, to see him in the movies you wouldn't expect it. I doubt today he would be as successful in Hollywood with its current climate.

This prototype lost out to the B-36 but should have been used instead but it's still lives today on Celluloid because it Ended up dropping a nuke on the aliens in 1950s the sci-fi movie War of the Worlds https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_YB-49

While this was a more elegant aircraft it failed as a bomber due to its inherent inability to hold a heading steady enough for accurate bombing runs.

B-36 were impressive aircraft! They were sometimes referred to as "Deterrent for a Decade." I recall them from my service as a young Volunteer in the Cold War Ground Observer Corps.
