Not one to defend the manner in which Trump speaks and the information he gathers before making statements, but there is absolutely merit in how the media is twisting what he says. For example,

Take the NYT (and others) articles on his beef with the Mayor. This is what the article wrote, quoting his tweets:

"Mr. Trump said the people of Puerto Rico should not depend entirely on the federal government. “They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort,” he wrote. “10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job. The military and first responders, despite no electric, roads, phones etc., have done an amazing job. Puerto Rico was totally destroyed.”"

Here's the whole tweet in context:
“The mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump,” Trump tweeted. "Such poor leadership ability by the mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help."
"They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort," he continued. "10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job."

He is obviously referring to the leadership within Puerto Rico, not the Puerto Ricans as a whole.

Gee only 20% of Puerto Rico's truck drivers showed up to help. I have a friend who works for a power company and they simply can't afford to send workers with out garuanteed of cost coverage. The electrical grid needs to be rebuilt. Things are getting better, slowly. The Mayor of San Juan missed meetings with those providing diseaster relief, but had no trouble bashing Trump.
