Little did they know the campaign would only get worse. They had to fight their way out from coastal areas. Then they were confronted with fighting through hedgerows that were difficult to cross over and hid German tanks. They fought for their lives in the middle of the winter as Germany threw all she could at them. Perhaps in the Battle of the Bulge, the 101st fought so bravely as light infantry soldiers because their training weeded out 95% of the trainees and they bonded in the misery. The 18th ABC had the perfect CG. LTG Ridgeway was not airborne trained but he made combat jumps with his soldiers. He remembered all the names of the soldiers he met. He cared about them. There were times he would mock the Germans by peeing in their direction as indirect fell around him. He was no pussy.
