I spent a short time working in a public high school and, no, I do not think the police officers made it any safer. If safety and security were their focus it might have the desired effect, but they spent too much of their time breaking up fights and wandering the parking lots looking at vehicle passes.
Also, considering the size of most middle school and high school campuses; does anyone believe one, or two, police officers can actually provide adequate security?

Thank you, 1SG, not only for your military service, but also your public service in law enforcement. Your experience in these matters certainly trumps my own, yet I can only speak from what I observed while working in a public high school with approximately 1000 students. The one assigned police officer did the best job possible considering the student population and the size of the campus, and while one is obviously better than none, the actual effect on overall safety was, at best, uncertain.

In a lot of these schools, the officers perform services other safety (in the emergency response sense). For instance, being a sounding board for kids who have no where else to turn to (peer to peer issues, parental issues, etc.). Role model is another function performed (in most cases).

I don't know if it makes them any safer but it can cut down on the amount of casualties IF the cop does his job. Sometimes it is a deterrent.
