I too served on the Kearsarge, in 1968 and she took me to Nam, it was my first ship, one of many I would serve on in my career, but my Kearsarge in 1968 was USS Kearsarge CV-33 a WWII era Essex class carrier, and we did not have such firepower. In fact all we had was four 5" 38 gun mounts! Me thinks our Gunnersmates could have had a ball with these! Thanks TSgt David L. for the great video!

CWO3 Dennis M., I'm certain those cats enjoy the shit out of them. I've seen video of them shooting the "Killer Tomatoes". I think Gunny Ermey did a show on that same ship.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - In the mid 1980's Bainbridge had CIWS installed 04 level Port and Starboard. My stateroom was directly below the CIWS mag starboard side 03 level. I was one of the ships command duty officers (CDO), a job that required my rounds include the engineering spaces. So, I had a TLD issued to me by the ships Doc. Once we got loaded out, my TLD was off the charts too. After extensive searches of the ship and, engineering spaces they could not figure out where I was getting exposed. They asked to check my stateroom, and Bingo. the Geiger counter went ballistic with the highest readings on my overhead. They asked what was above me and I told them it was the CWIS mount and Mag. They went to the 04 level and wow! We ended up getting our CiWS mags getting lead lining on the bulkheads, overhead & deck. The skipper told me there was a Navy wide order to line all the CIWS Mags with lead due to this incident. He also told me the tanks equipped with the Vulcan Phalanx were also affected. By the way shortly after I retired I was diagnosed with prostate cancer...coincidence? I doubt it..... it did not run in my family! I am fine now, had it removed. As far as that cancer is concerned I am cancer free at 70 years old.

PO3 Bob McCord - Yep Bob, you and I could have had a great time on the beach together. I will have tell you about my Libs in Manila, PI 1969 some day. Might have to be a private message as we do not want to upset the new Navy sailors with such trash talk! And then again there was a time I was hauled back to fleet landing in Hong Kong in the shore patrol paddy wagon with my steamin buddy Mike Daniels. That should be private message as well. And then again there were many port calls to Olongapo too...no can't talk about that ether. How about my tour in VC-5...nope not here! Bob, we just need to get together and knock some back and tell a few no shitters. I miss the old Navy!
