My Opinion on Hate Hoaxes is that those caught doing this should receive a more severe punishment than if it it was real, the collateral damage from what they do should warrant this.

If it is found that a hate crime is a hoax the person(s) should be held accountable after being afforded due process, it is akin to yelling fire in an indoor crowd setting, a clear and present danger

I will agree with the other commentator that stated that the hoaxes make it more difficult to believe those that really occurred. So few are ever solved that it is hard to know what percentage of these ever really happen. I saw one article a few months ago that showed statistics for one area where about 200 hate crimes had happened but out of the ones that were solved only about 50% were real. The number solved was only about 10% of the total so this doesn't really tell us anything but it is an interesting statistic.
