Hannibal at Cannae. It was so vicious that there are accounts where Hannibal's forces cut the hamstrings
of enemy soldiers to prevent their escape, and some Roman soldiers tried to suffocate themselves with dirt.

GySgt John Olson - I see it as maneuver outflanking a Roman army in a linear formation with depth.

GySgt John Olson - Note I posted up some additional great reads - one on Hannibal in the Alps - the other on a list of 25 Great Captains of Ancient times.

If you inject (amerikan?) "politics" into the mix it tends to hamstring, limit, taint, obfuscate, and hamper military plans, leadership, procurement, and manpower. IMHO. Under that mentality, Politically, modern wars need to be reduced to short "sound-bites", must fit within political "cycles", TV programing schedules, and a fickle public's attention span - or risk "losing public support". Vietnam was a prime (modern) example, which we "lost" politically, became a "poster child" for a nearly "complete waste". In WW2, "Politics, Infighting" and jealousies" complicated/lengthened the defeat of Germany. The "cold war" lasted for decades under the costly banners of "attrition and appeasment" and Korean War led to only a costly, generational "armistice", which only now may be showing some signs of getting "wrapped up" (we'll see).

Nazi Germany was very prepared for WWII because they conducted a military wide AAR on WWI all the way down to infantry squads to develop new technology and doctrine. The other nations were content on the laurels of WWI and experimenting with new technology.

I think that we have seen 3 since the start of the century. Matis is one, the IRGC Commander is yet another, and the 3d was an unknown general commanding IS in Mosul who lost a tactical battle in a year of fighting but scored a strategic victory.
