I am particularly proud of this new addition to the Union Pacific Heritage Fleet, quartered near us in Council Bluffs, IA. We are a Union Pacific family. My wife retired from the company and I served as the president of the board of directors of the UPRR Museum for several years. Having those connections, I've been able to live the dream of many a boy and girl by riding in the cabs of the 844 Big Boy and the 3965 Challenger across Midwestern states. The thrill of those adventures cannot be adequately expressed.

Didn't D&RGW have several of those monsters? Growing up near the rail way, I recall seeing them occasionally -- usually northbound in the autumn. They had a high, shrill whistle.

There were literally a few thousand small spur, intra-state railroads in the middle and late 1800s and into the 1900s. Almost all were gone by 1960. Outside of the two biggies and another half dozen medium sized RRs today, any local systems are either tourist-related or very small freighters. The Denver Rio was a persistent survivor.
