In all likelihood...Mav wouldn't have made it out of the VTs with that attitude and all of the emotional baggage exhibited in the film. Even accounting for different times/different expectations...I doubt his incident involving Goose's death would've resulting in anything other than the loss of his aviation career.

Of course his father and grandfather were Admirals which may have helped when some of exploits were brought to light.
