What most people fail to understand is that the Founding Fathers wanted to keep religion out of government, and that most Christian leaders of the time of the Constitutional Convention opposed ratifying the Constitution. Timothy Dwight, the Christian leader of Yale, stated just a few years later that the United States had upset the Christian god because "The Convention, by which it was formed, never asked, even once, His direction, or His blessings, upon their labors. Thus we commenced our national existence under the present system, without God." The anonymous anti-Federalist writer Philadelphiensis complained about the "silence" and "indifference about religion" in his writings opposing ratification. This was a continuing trend of the religious Christian community until the 1920s and 1930s, when they decided to flip the narrative.
