Gun safety is important. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
Years ago I took one of my young airmen dove hunting. When we arrived at the field I took my shotgun out of the case, opened the breach, made sure there was no shell. I loaded my 3 shells, then made sure the gun was pointed in a safe direction.
The airman took his gun out of the case, loaded his shotgun, and proceeded to handle his weapon in a manner that the barrel passed by me a number of times.
I asked him to eject his 3 shells, he di. I told him to put the gun away, we would not be hunting that day. I explained his unsafe gun handling and suggested he take a gun safety course.
In the long run, he did take the course and I gave him another opportunity, which he passed to my satisfaction.
I won't hunt or shoot with anyone that I don't feel is safe handling a firearm.
