Very sad but there is a long history of this that goes back at lease to my time in service (mid 80's). How many times were we on guard duty of critical areas with nothing but of hands to defend ourselves, sometimes an empty M16? If we were attacked we would die, we all knew it. We don't know what the rational was, we believed it was just that we were weren't trusted with loaded weapons. It doesn't look like it's changed any.

....exceeeeeeept.....

They aren't there to "protect CBP." They are there to SUPPORT CBP. They aren't there to protect the border, either. That is CBPs job. They aren't armed because there is no circumstance under which they should be firing a weapon. It's like asking why we don't all go locked and loaded to motor pool Monday.
