1. He is not first SECDEF to not have uniformed time, but some criticized Ashton Carter during Obama’s time for also not having it either
2. Mattis already submitted formal and official resignation. Trump replacing him early changes his departure from voluntarily leaving to firing
3. Timing may not be about retirement, but circumventing checks and balances. Since Congress is not in session, acting replacement temporarily avoids normal confirmation process

LTC Eugene Chu I'd quibble a bit with point two. If you submit your two week resignation and the company instead immediately lets you go instead, I wouldn't consider that being fired. If it was, there would be a whole lotta unemployment claims associated with that because those people would have been fired without cause.

LTC Eugene Chu I did some research. You are right and I'm wrong. It is considered being fired and af that did happen to you are I we could likely collect unemployment. Interesting. I guess I learned my thing today.

Actually what is usually done in the civilian world if someone gives their 2 weeks and they are going to a competitor or it is suspected they are goin to a competitor they will be walked out that day but will be oaid for the 2 weeks they gave. That way it is not the same thing as being fired in that case.

The suggestion that McGurk resigned in order to save some excess leave is so absurd it is simply ridiculous. Take a look at that man's bio, and the level of positions he has held. He was due to leave that assignment in Feb 2019 anyway, but as he said in his resignation letter, he no longer felt he could do that job and maintain his integrity at the same time. Sorry, the notion that all this came about because he suddenly realized in Dec 2018 that he might lose some leave if he stayed until his scheduled departure two months later shows just how far some will try and stretch the truth to avoid reality.

If he took his Civ Serv pre-retirement class, and everyone does....and when he put in that he wanted to leave in FEB....CPO would have told him that was not smart. When I did not want to wait until 1st Week of JAN the CPO did a cost evaluation on how much I would lose...and I said my bones were not staying for the cold weather. At the SES level it has a bigger impact than at my level. I do believe he may have been looking at the numbers....or his wife was looking at them.

There are lots of civilians I know that have “and” don’t have the skill sets to be SECDEF. There are lots of veterans I know that have “and” don’t have the skill sets to be SECDEF. The key is who does and doesn’t have the skills.
