My first unit on active duty was C Co, 44th Engineers - the "Broken Hearts" battalion who were in Korea for the war and for 50 years beyond. We did a battalion "staff ride" to Chipyong-ni and walked the battlefield. Our Bn S-3 at the time had written a book on the battle, which was of course required reading for all the officers and senior NCOs.

My first time in Korea was Team Spirit 88, and our BN maneuvered through that area. I remember we had a "pause" in the exercise to reflect on the significance of the ground we were standing on.
