Very interesting. Occasionally some one buys a house and finds an abandoned shelter.

I remember these shelters quite well. At Charleston AFB we had a designated shelter for us dependants at our school. It was 3 miles from ground zero and would only have kept us safe for about as long as it took to penetrate the concrete walls that had no lead shielding.

We had one in the apartment building we lived in. I remember seeing big containers of water down there.

Lt Col Charlie Brown - In Chicago, the underground tunnels for the trains had sub-basements that were completely stocked for such emergencies. These were beneath the tracks of the trains. They were actually discovered years ago after a flood. And Al Capone had his own tunnel system that could have used as a fallout shelter.
