We are living in the midst of several major crises, including the environment and the institutional church. Does academic theology play a role here as well? Well, yes. As co-creators, we can begin to resolve some of the problems by better integrating theology and science.
Teilhard de Chardin is one the most important thinkers of the 20th century because he integrated theology into the wider current of modern science. He rightly stated that religion cannot be done outside or apart from the basic insights of modern science.
How often I have heard statements like "Evolution is not a proven theory" or "There are different theories of evolution" or "Quantum physics is an incomplete theory." If science actually followed these narrow ideas, we would not have electricity, running water, and certainly not computers and cellphones. We would live agrarian lives, travel by horse and buggy, and die at young ages.

I of course knew of Teilhard de Chardin, and his research...I didn't necessarily agree with everything I'd read by him, though evolution as the rise of consciousness was clearly perceptive on his part...however, evolution occurs due to relatively straightforward nonlinear theromdynamics, whereas quantum mechanics (QM) arose due to human perception of phenomena that hadn't been heretofore discerned, as human sociologic consciousness, and, hence, scientific literacy, developed...that, at least, is my view of such matters, such as it is....

Theology is science, for science in all of its elements and workings was created by God and works in perfect harmony throughout the universe. Here is an interesting video well worth the watch.

As I'd said above, my wife and the pastor of the church we go to have been trying to beat on my skull about such things for years now, with pretty much zero success...I entirely perceive your reasoning, however, having studied rather a good deal of science, as well as having been exposed at this point to a considerable fraction of intelligent design material, I, and I realize this is purely my own thought process, just simply find the intelligent design concept rather fanciful wishful thinking...my wife constantly refers to one image of a molecule in a cell that resembles a Cross, with the inevitable result that she, our pastor (whom I do certainly commend for her zeal, if nothing else), as well as sevl others in the church, a few of whom are engineers or technicians, constantly beat the drum and sound the gong that such a molecule is proof of God...at which point I just kind of roll my eyes skyward in resignation, and just basically say "Yes, dear"...not that I'm convinced, by any means, mind you, however, as the saying goes, discretion is most definitely the better part of valor, you know?
