These guys were the first popular act to have white guys and black guys, and black and white women, too. The first to have women PLAYING INSTRUMENTS! They have 6 songs on the 500 greatest rock song list from Rolling Stone, the only ones to beat them were the Beatles, the Stones, Dylan, Presley, and Hendrix. Pretty lofty company, there. I think they are the most underappreciated act from the 60s-70s era.
In the late '60s, the Black Panthers came to Sly and told him he needed to get those white people out of his band. He told them, "Get the f*** out of my dressing room!"
