From the article- "But in the early 1990s, the historical tether between American identity and faith snapped. Religious non-affiliation in the U.S. started to rise—and rise, and rise. By the early 2000s, the share of Americans who said they didn’t associate with any established religion (also known as “nones”) had doubled. By the 2010s, this grab bag of atheists, agnostics, and spiritual dabblers had tripled in size."

That is the same time frame as the "hockey stick" rise of mass shooters. Coincidence?

I don't think that you can blame the religious for the uptick in violence, for a couple of reasons. First, even though the religious, especially the evangelicals are scared to death of a secular society, there has always been violence on the part of the religious. Second, the number of actual shootings over that period has dropped. But we should still try and identify those religious people with a predisposition towards violence.

Ahhhm...
a) The point was this- shootings increased as religious affiliation DECREASED. The religious are much more likely to be targets of mass shootings rather than perpetrators.
b) The stats for ALL shootings involving three or more victims have skyrocketed. Your chart may be correct for the sub-set of school shootings, I hope it is, but the overall trend has been upward.

I also credit the appearance of first person shooter games in the mid '90s for a good part of the total increase.
