I doubt that anyone in the early days of the nuclear industry paused to realize that their waste was going to be dangerous for the next half-million years.

Today, we are on the verge of a new age where fusion makes the energy cheap, and no waste to speak of.

Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Lewis Strauss, in a 1954 address to science writers, had actually coined the phrase “too cheap to meter” to describe fusion power, not fission.

“Transmutation of the elements,–unlimited power, ability to investigate the working of living cells by tracer atoms, the secret of photosynthesis about to be uncovered,–these and a host of other results all in 15 short years. It is not too much to expect that our children will enjoy in their homes electrical energy too cheap to meter,–will know of great periodic regional famines in the world only as matters of history,–will travel effortlessly over the seas and under them and through the air with a minimum of danger and at great speeds,–and will experience a lifespan far longer than ours, as disease yields and man comes to understand what causes him to age. This is the forecast for an age of peace.”

I know nothing about Nuclear power how come the submarine use it and civilization isn’t using it for something?

The solution is so simple. Open Yucca Mountain with the nuclear industry not the gov’t placed in charge to run it like a business to handle spent radioactive fuel. Better yet, build breeder reactors and have no waste at all. You’ll end global warming, you can restart a nuclear industry invented in America to build modern and safe reactors, and still running globally on American capital. Develop fusion power sooner.

LCDR Andy Hill - I don't understand why we haven't pursued MSR technology since it eliminates that biggest danger spot in the reactor, the high pressure water coolant system. If you look at the possibilities of MSR and thorium fast breeder technology, it's safer, very little waste and produces fuel.

I could agree with that. Thorium as fuel would make a MSR even safer.

useful energy is about 165 MeV per fission... but the results get kinda messy.
