How often arrogance supersedes common sense only to bring about disaster.
The author mentions the arrogance of the builders of the Titanic but while the finger points to the lack of lifeboats, that was just a consequence of a much larger issue. Had the captain not been ordered to run at top speed, the ship would have likely missed the iceberg altogether.
Would Captain Scott had taken a page out of the book of the Norwijan explorers regarding the use of dogs, would he have fared better? Probably, but we shall never know.
