We are seeing the result of years of anti-science and anti-intellectual beliefs. Don't want to believe in global warming, you have to discredit the scientists. Don't want to believe in inconvenient world events, well shoot the news media as messengers. We watched these people grasp onto conspiracy theories and any whack job that would tell them what they want to hear.
Now we have a real health crisis and they are the ones running the show. COVID-19 doesn't give a cr@p about political beliefs, wealth or any other thing that we normally use to isolate ourselves from the consequences of our actions. There is a reason we became the epicenter, we don't take it seriously, we ignore the experts and do what the hell we want because we don't want our lives to be inconvenienced or disrupted. As a nation, we pretty much only just give a sh!t about ourselves and as a society will go to great lengths to protect their beliefs.
Even in the face of this emergency where their beliefs have led to the US becoming the epicenter with tens of thousands Americans deaths, and tens of thousands likely still to go they won't take responsibility for their actions or alter to one iota their beliefs. We can see this play out right here on this thread. Wasn't us, isn't really happening, other people did some other stuff, etc, etc, etc. Anything to get out of taking any personal responsibility.
Of course COVID-19 doesn't care about anything like that; it is just a biological machine that is going to do what it is going to do.

I look at the information many of those deniers are fed. Almost every bit can be traced back to some big business that would lose money if the science was followed. It reminds me of the Civil War. Big business (cotton) convinced the less fortunate that they should fight for "freedom," "states rights," "stop the big federal government" while in reality they were fighting for the profits of the cotton industry, profits that were spent for the comfortable living of the few, while the many died. Propaganda, pure and simple, just as we are seeing today.
