It was an awesome interceptor but cost did it in.

Being a model airplane builder, a model of the YF-12 was available in the early 60's. I didn't hear of the SR-71 til years later.

Yup, it was billed as being based in Texas and being able to intercept incoming Soviet aircraft before those fighters based in Alaska.
