We still see similar mass hysteria today, manifesting itself as fake news and unfounded rumors that eventually get accepted as fact. SSDD

Robert, I can see the same hysteria when I see obviously ridiculous fake news. SGT Robert Pryor

In my family tree, you'll find a Sarah Elwell (nee Bassett), whose sister, Elizabeth, was married to the John Proctor mentioned in your post as being hung as a witch on August 19, 1692. Elizabeth was to be hung on the same day, and was only spared because she was pregnant. By the time she had given birth, the hysteria had ended, and she was not hung.

Thank God she was spared so we would have today. There is nothing worse than corrupt power in any form.

SGT Anthony Rossi - I descend from Sarah, not Elizabeth. As far as I can tell, the Elwells were never tried and condemned for witchcraft.
