APOD: 2020 October 20 - Saturn and Jupiter over Italian Peaks

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Saturn and Jupiter over Italian Peaks." We are off on a hike above the Italian snow line to Tré Címe di Lavaredo (Three Peaks of Lavarado) this morning. Over the peaks, we see the planets Saturn and Jupiter, with a tail end of the Milky Way thrown in for good measure. The image looks to be taken just after sunset. We can see Saturn and Jupiter in the southwest sky as well in the US. Both are inching closer together, and in mid-December will meet in their closest planetary conjunction since 1623.

This is wonderful image from the Italian Alps. I expect many are looking forward to "mid-December" 2020 of a Great Conjunction as Saturn and Jupiter will appear as though they are 0.1 horizontal degrees apart in a view from earth [not to mention how far apart they are in physical distance [the distance to Saturn from Jupiter is about 4.32 AU that is approximately 646,270,000 in kilometers and 401,592,178 in miles.]

APOD Background
"Explanation: Saturn and Jupiter are getting closer. Every night that you go out and check for the next two months, these two bright planets will be even closer together on the sky. Finally, in mid-December, a Great Conjunction will occur -- when the two planets will appear only 0.1 degrees apart -- just one fifth the angular diameter of the full Moon. And this isn't just any Great Conjunction -- Saturn (left) and Jupiter (right) haven't been this close since 1623, and won't be nearly this close again until 2080. This celestial event is quite easy to see -- already the two planets are easily visible toward the southwest just after sunset -- and already they are remarkably close. Pictured, the astrophotographer and partner eyed the planetary duo above the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Three Peaks of Lavaredo) in the Italian Alps about two weeks ago."
