Thank you my second-amendment advocate friend CW5 Jack Cardwell for posting the Stephen & Caleb from Brownells Inc. Smyth Busters: The "Ping" of the M1 Garand Clip
"Almost any history of the M1 Garand (officially the "U.S. rifle, caliber .30, M1") will tell the story of the rifle's one supposed flaw: After the last round is fired from the Garand's en bloc clip, the "ping" sound of the clip being ejected gives away your position to the enemy AND since he knows you're reloading, that's the time he'll attack. We asked our Smyth Busting sleuths, Brownells Gun Techs Caleb and Steve, if this is really true. No suspense here: the guys say the Garand Clip Ping story is a total MYTH. In a fire fight - with many soldiers shooting their rifles, exploding grenades and ordnance, vehicle noises, and the general roar of combat - how can anybody tell which soldier's Garand just pinged, even if you can hear it? And with all his comrades shooting at the same time, there's no opportunity to attack while he reloads - unless you want to commit suicide. Caleb has been in actual combat, and he attests that a little metallic "ping" is the last thing one hears in a fire fight. So the myth of the M1 Garand clip's deadly ping is just that - a fun myth that is BUSTED! Now, what about "Garand Thumb"?
