David Hobbs of Clairemont knows the words virtually by heart. He should. His re-enlistment yesterday was his 12th.
Hobbs, a Master Chief Boatswain’s Mate aboard the carrier Ranger, has been on duty with the Navy since before Pearl Harbor plunged the United States into World War II. With 41 years in, Hobbs has the longest continuous service of any person now in the Navy.

In Norfolk, VA outside Main Gate there was a store and in the window they had a uniform that had over 30 years on the sleeve. At the time (1974) when I saw it the jacket was of a Master Chief with the longest service. Master Chief Hobbs may have the record now.

Master Chief Hobbs had 30+ year in when I first met him in 1976! Not sure when he finally retired! I know that he was married to a E-9 Marine! I saw her in San Diego, we were tying up at NASNI saw them walking down the pier coming from the Ranger! Both of them in uniform!

I served with Master Chief Hobbs back in the mid 70’s! He had already been in 30+ years then! He was a great role model for young sailors to follow! I do believe that his 41 years is a record!
