Sgt (Join to see) I love chess and think this is a great idea. No matter the MOS, Marines can adapt and overcome all obstacles. Semper Fi.

I commented on this before. Not sure this is the best use of resources. While I understand the desire to increase the mental acumen of infantrymen, one must consider the Chess argument of pattern memorization vs actual creative thinking. Chess had dick-all to do with tactical level combat given that chess is constrained in its rigid rules, alternating turns, and predictable patterns. Tactical engagements are not. I fear that all we will gain from this are infantrymen that are slightly better at playing chess in their off time.

I agree with some of this, as in expand the way we think and teaching critical thinking. I do not think this method will work well for all, and not everyone is strategic minded.

I do not agree with letting them do their own thing and telling what was wrong. SOI is still to new for new recruits. The foundation which was brought during my tenure at SOI is what gave me the ability to know what to bring. I think this article left allot of information out, which would make some of the comments make more sense.
