Here are some strategic aspects. The Allied powers contested the Mediterranean Sea and eventually controlled it. This prevented shipping supplies, vehicles, equipment, and fuel to the German army in North Africa. The Germans attempted to fly in supplies and fuel, but it was insufficient to support a large mechanized force. The Germans eventually ran out of fuel. From the Allied perspective the Americans shipped hundreds of tanks to North Africa. Patton took over a US army group that had its ass kicked over and over by Rommel. Patton had a week to prepare for a large battle with 50 German tanks and won. Patton was a winner.

PO2 (Join to see) - You are most welcome. Can you imagine the poor General Eisenhower who planned the N. African campaign and controlling the Mediterranean sea. He planned the Italian campaign and later D-Day and the European campaign. I could not do that.
I had an epiphany one day. It sounds silly at face value. Countries lose wars by attrition. Attrition can be cause by the enemy. Sometimes it is caused by a country that feels compelled to expand the war into unrealistic proportions like the Germans and Japanese in WWII. Sometimes a military can't support its forces. Sometimes the country capability to produce instruments of war in not sufficient to replace the losses. Sometimes militaries run out of things. The Germans ran out of pilots and fuel. In Russia the Germans ran out of everything but soldiers, but soldiers who are not supported will not win.
I think I should mention attrition due to lack of popular support and the resolve of politicians.
