I was working as a security guard at a popular expensive hotel in Seattle. After finishing my rounds of all 10 floors, I noted the night manager was upset. While I had been gone there was an attempted robbery, no call to me during or after. The duo attempting to rob him took advantage of him wearing a real tie. When he leaned closer while looking at the screen in front of him, one grabbed his tie and took control. He was able to fend them off, then called the police. Had he had a breakaway tie, it would have gone better. You ever notice ID lanyards are now breakaway? A woman can wear her pony tail, but the first time either during hand to hand training, or in an actual fight the opponent grabs that tail and uses it against her, she will cut it off. IMHO.

But, in terms of combat, how likely is that? Soldiers spend the majority of their time not deployed. If we base our standards all the time on combat then we all need to wear body armor and be armed stateside. Commanders are still commanders and if they deem an operational need for hair to go back up or be cut they'll enforce that.

Back in the late '70's early '80's the Navy did away with beards. The why is easy, use of the OBA (Oxygen Breathing Apparatus), using a gas mask attachment to the face meant you couldn't have a beard and use one though everyone shipboard was trained in there use. Same with the onboard emergency escape breathing systems (the exact acronym lost in my aged gray cells) for shipboard emergencies. Then there was the requirement to carry and possibly don a Mark V gas mask during General Quarters. But not all of the Navy personnel would need to be prepared to use these items unless they were on ships, or in a situationally required environment, yet the Navy banned beards for all hands except for medical exceptions.

CW3 Matt Tait - is it about equality or retribution? And females have had there fair share of privilege, and still do today. Lesser sentences for the same crime, all of the power in the determination of progeny and reproductive rights, Domestic violence, custody, divorce settlements, selective service. you cannot fix the errors of the past by swinging the pendulum to the opposite side, and then claim "equality"

I'd hardly call wearing ones hair down, male or female, a privilege to begin with. The military as a community gets way to bent out of shape about hair length, sideburns, beards, mustaches etc. We don't all need to look like Marine recruits to look professional.

SSG Robert Perrotto - I'm probably biased having a mom who served and two daughters but I'm also, selfishly, hoping that this is an indication of things to come. I'm don't want a ponytail, but a bit longer hair, long enough to comb on the sides and a short beard would be welcome.

Ponytails and Pinks and Greens, at least we have that going for us which is pretty good. Watch out China
