In 1945 over Japan, SSG Henry Erwin in a B-29 Superfortress bomber picked up a 20 lbs. white phospherous flare that errantly burned in the plane. He frantically searched for the flare in the heavy smoke and eventually picked it up. He yelled open the window! Open the window! He threw the flare out. The B-29 immediately turned around to return to the base. His heroics was so supernatural and everyone expected to die at any moment that congress awarded him the Medal of Honor the next day.

In interviews with his fellow crewmembers they became emotional when the talked about what he had accomplished, and candidly said they could not have done it. They did not know how he could do it. Perhaps it was the result of an immense amount of adrenaline and bravery.

You are most welcome. SSG Erwin will be etched in my memory. I don’t think I could or would have done what he did. SFC William Farrell
