Heartbreak Hotel “was written by Tommy Durden and Mae Boren Axton, with credit being given also to Presley.”
Mae Axton was the mother of singer, songwriter and actor, Hoyt Axton. Hoyt graduated from Robert E. Lee HS in Jacksonville, FL, which is also my alma mater.

It is pretty cool, SPC Woody Bullard, especially the story that goes with it. My junior English teacher was Mrs. Marion Dale. She told this story.
She also taught Hoyt English his junior year. She said one day, there was a knock at the door, the police walked in, and asked for Hoyt. Hoyt jumped up and out of one the floor to ceiling windows and ran down McDuff Avenue until the police caught him!
I’m pretty sure it’s a true story. Mrs. Dale wasn’t a fibber!
He also wrote Never Been to Spain (Three Dog Night), Greenback Dollar (Kingston Trio) and many others.
