General tells House lawmakers pandemic helped Air Force retain 200 pilots amid constant shortage

The Air Force’s chief of staff told House lawmakers on Friday that the service has slightly reduced its deficit in pilots, following initial concern that a reduction in flight training due to the coronavirus pandemic could exacerbate the Air Force’s long-standing pilot shortage.

“We've made some progress over the course of the past year, where we shortened the gap by about 200,” Gen. Charles “CQ” Brown said at an Air Force and Space Force budget hearing of the House Appropriations Committee’s subpanel on defense.

Good morning, ma'am. This seems like good news but I suspect a soft soap piece of journalism. The Air Force needs pilots, bottom line. I think that what the USAF did was to 'freeze' pilots about to get out and hasn't released them yet. Also the article states that ten ( I think I got the number riggt) pilots have received their wings down at San Antonio. If so that is only 1900+ still short and the gap will get larger. I want to be wrong but I also cannot add two plus two and get five. Please, if I am wrong help me understand. Thanks again for posting this article.

The gap will get bigger. The up or out system favors those willing to step away from the cockpit. Until they figure out how to deal with that...

Lt Col Charlie Brown Always hated that system. Don't know feelings now but in my time knew lots who would have been happy flying as Captains forever rather than jumping through the hoops to be "promotable".

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - One reason it seems the Army resorted to Warrant Officers as pilots, nor rank overage but not enlisted men either, a plan to retain needed pilots and their experience .
