Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Lightning Eclipse from the Planet of the Goats." Did you know there will be a total lunar eclipse on Wednesday? Sadly, unless you live in Hawai'i, Australia, or Antarctica you won't be able to see much of it. The eclipse starts on the US East Coast at around 4:45AM with maximum partiality at 6:02AM (and sunrise right around the corner). Better viewing will be found the further west you go.
Which brings us to the "Planet of the Goats." This 30-second exposure was captured on the Greek island of Ikaria and first featured on this page back in 2011. The topography of the island is a contrast between verdant slopes and barren steep rocks. The primary domesticated animal (you guessed it): goats. There is a lunar eclipse going on behind the thunderstorm. A fine follow-on to the Galaxy Tree from yesterday.

"Explanation: Thunderstorms almost spoiled this view of the spectacular 2011 June 15 total lunar eclipse. Instead, storm clouds parted for 10 minutes during the total eclipse phase and lightning bolts contributed to the dramatic sky. Captured with a 30-second exposure the scene also inspired one of the more memorable titles (thanks to the astrophotographer) in APOD's now 25-year history. Of course, the lightning reference clearly makes sense, and the shadow play of the dark lunar eclipse was widely viewed across planet Earth in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. The picture itself, however, was shot from the Greek island of Ikaria at Pezi. That area is known as "the planet of the goats" because of the rough terrain and strange looking rocks. The next total lunar eclipse will occur on Wednesday."
