Soon after DeWitt got the children to safety, Manistee Police arrived. Manistee City Police Chief Josh Glass spoke out about her bravery.

Wow, Lt Col Charlie Brown!!! What a horrendous situation to be in if you are a woman 5 months pregnant dealing with three possible death by drowning occurrences! This woman, this mother, used unbelievable strength and determination to save these three kids from drowning... Awesome!

Without risk, can there be courage? It might be said that the act of becoming a mother, at least voluntarily, is itself an act of courage. Risking the life of the child within while risking oneself, is certainly above and beyond what most would do. I will add this to my collection of stories of heroic acts which I study to better understand the nature of courage
