My question is.....is it going to be taught as to why it is a holiday? Or is that something the GQP doesn't want?

Dear Top, My youngest used to do the proof reading on changes to text books before they went to mass printing. They had the 'War of Northern Aggression' for the Civil War. And yes, they were going to red states.

1SG, that's a good question. Depends on Congress, the governor's, and local legislator's. MLK day wasn't observed by all 50 states either(although now it is), so I'd reasonably expect some people to use this as political capitol when dealing with minorities, and others to be seen as "pandering to minorities". Take your pick on who is who. But for this to be taught as to why it exists, would change history(basically stomp on the Emancipation Proclamation), and show folks weren't as "free" as common taught history would show. It'd also make Native Americans upset because now they'd be forced to acknowledge their role in slavery, and post Proclamation.

We will be in court long before it is fully implemented. Taken to court by who is the question.

SSG Warren Swan - I'm for telling the way it actually was. They were still enslaved in Texas for two years longer than the Emancipation Proclamation. I don't hear anyone denying that.

SSG Warren Swan Kudos to the Republican Senators for their bi-partisanship.

(CNN)The Senate unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday establishing June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day, a US holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

The legislation has gained momentum since the massive Black Lives Matter protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd last year and the Democrats' takeover of the White House and Congress.
But Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson blocked the bill in 2020, saying that the day off for federal employees would cost US taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. Johnson dropped his objection this week despite his concerns, paving the way for the bill's passage in the Senate.
"Although I strongly support celebrating Emancipation, I objected to the cost and lack of debate," said Johnson in a statement. "While it still seems strange that having taxpayers provide federal employees paid time off is now required to celebrate the end of slavery, it is clear that there is no appetite in Congress to further discuss the matter."
The measure needs to pass the House and be signed by President Joe Biden to become law.
On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger announced in Galveston, Texas, the end of slavery in accordance with President Abraham Lincoln's 1863 Emancipation Proclamation.
In 1980, Juneteenth became a Texas state holiday. In the decades since, every state but South Dakota came to officially commemorate Juneteenth, but only a handful of states observe it as a paid holiday.
Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Ed Markey, Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee are among the members of Congress who led the effort to to make Juneteenth the 12th federal holiday.

SSG Warren Swan - Holidays should be about the meaning of why we are observing it and not just a day off. Fiscally another federal holiday will cost money so why not get rid of Columbus Day and Labor Day and make Juneteenth one of them and a National Election Holiday the other. Lets use this cancel culture to our benefit and get rid of the disliked Columbus Day. We get the holiday's we need and get rid of the ones we do not need.

MAJ Byron Oyler - Due respect for your opinion... but cancel culture is a bunch of B.S.. IMO.
Getting rid of any Holidays would take bi-partisanship... good luck there.

MAJ Byron Oyler - Juneteenth is a day when the promises of the declaration started to be taken seriously across the US, it is a day to be proud of.Columbus not only did not "discover" America, he was a scumbag of the first order, rapist, slaver and murderer, he recorded his evil in writing and bragged about it.
