On June 30, 1860, the famous debate on Charles Darwin's theory of evolution was held at the Oxford University Museum. An excerpt from the article:
"On 30 June 1860, the Museum hosted a clash of ideologies that has become known as the Great Debate.
Even before the collections were fully installed, or the architectural decorations completed, the British Association for the Advancement of Science held its 30th annual meeting to mark the opening of the building, then known as the University Museum. It was at this event that Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford, and Thomas Huxley, a biologist from London, went head-to-head in a debate about one of the most controversial ideas of the 19th century – Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection.
Darwin's On the Origin of Species had been published the previous November, so the ideas it contained were fresh. The lecture and discussion on the subject took place in what was then the Radcliffe Library, on the first floor of the Museum. Although no-one accurately recorded what was said in front of the noisy crowd of almost 500 people, the story that has emerged is of a sharp intellectual volley between Wilberforce and Huxley."

Evolution is an important concept but we have significant learning on the intermediate fossils and timelines of development of 'where we came from'.

Sir, for me the idea of evolution of species is not worthwhile even contemplating. My Bible has all the truth of the origins of all things.

SSG Samuel Kermon - I am also a member of the Christian faith and understand the believer's dilemma with Evolution. I think that science and faith are compatible in the approach of they explain different aspects of life.

Capt Gregory Prickett Not trying to cause a Scopes trial with my intermediate fossils comment. I agree that Evolution and natural selection are the current scientific theories. I hope science will continue to improve as no one has been able to do the first part of what Darwin's theory requires. What is the Origin of Life, that is what starts the creation of life from lifeless organic compounds? Darwin's natural selection does not attempt to resolve this obvious problem.
