Our mistake wasn't invading Afghanistan, it was in staying around and trying to do nation building. We can't save everyone, particularly people who don't want saving. Had we just gone in and went after Al Qaeda until they fled to Pakistan and then pulled out with the message, "Don't make us come back" we would have been much better off.
It's debatable if the Afghanis would be better off than if we stayed or left and that that's part of the point.

A waste of us being there. Period. There's no fight in ANA, ANP... Which is evident now and especially after all of ISAF is gone.

SSG John Oliver - Certainly a waste now. At this point I'm not sure what we are doing there other than stopping them from killing each other and both sides are not exactly fond of us. The longer we are there, the less fond of us they become.

SPC Kevin Ford There's a reason why Afghanistan is called the "Graveyard of Empires". The only people who benefited were the Defense industry. Anywhere we go it's a "You break it you buy it".

War indeed is a profound expression of insanity. No foreign invading agents will ever win the hearts and minds of these peoples. I fully support the withdraw of our troops despite the adverse consequences for the peoples there.

Many think loosening ROE in Afghanistan would lead to victory. The Russians bombed villages and civilians indiscriminately and conducted total war and still lost. ROE was not the problem. Our problem was using a failed doctrine to win the war for 20 years.
