On July 18, 1984, 21 people were killed and 19 were injured in a massacre in a McDonalds restaurant in San Ysidro, California and was the worst mass slaying by a single shooter in US history at that time. The perpetrator, James Oliver Huberty, was the neighbor of a friend of mine who lived in Massillon. He said it was only a matter of time before he went off, and he was relieved when he moved away. It seemed like everyone who knew him expected it to happen. An excerpt from the article:

Huberty, who had a history of mental problems, lost his job in Ohio the previous year. He brought his family to San Diego and worked as a security guard until he was fired again, a month before the shootings. His wife claimed that Huberty called a mental health clinic to make an appointment for counseling but was never called back. Huberty had a love affair with guns, keeping a small arsenal in his bedroom. Neighbors described him as very angry."

You know, I'm always amazed when white people point to a mass killing event and say it was the largest of its kind at the time. They never, ever, count the times that they murdered non-whites. At the Gnadenhutten massacre in 1781, whites slaughtered 96 Lenni Lenape (Delaware) Indians who had converted to Christianity, after they raped all of the women and girls.
In 1864, the Colorado militia massacred between 150-200 Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians, mostly women and children, at Sand Creek, Colorado.
In 1890, nearly 250 Lakota (Sioux) were killed in cold blood at Wounded Knee, South Dakota.
The 21 killed at McDonald's don't even come close to being the worst mass slaying.

Capt Gregory Prickett You are right about those horrific crimes. I also remember some history books that called those "battles" while any Native American wins were called massacres. The one I remember well was the Fetterman "massacre". That battle was a strategic and tactical victory by the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho.
