I think too many managers and supervise operate on a culture of shame. When something happens it’s always first instinct to find the person they feel is responsible and shame them in order to try and correct what they see as incorrect behavior. Shame does nothing to actually push a person to improve. It merely pushes them to stay below the radar or not make mistakes or what they perceive will be seen as a mistake and bring on further shame. It’s toxic. You can tell a culture of shame exists in an organization pretty easily just by asking what happens when someone makes a mistake. Sadly the vast majority of people in a leadership use shame to try and get the behavior they want out of workers.
