When an Air India flight carrying 40 passengers - all Afghans - from Delhi approached the airport in Kabul on Sunday afternoon, air traffic control cleared it for landing.
It was a warm, sunny day with temperatures rising to 35C.
The six-member crew had little idea of how fast things were unravelling on the ground. Taliban fighters were seizing Kabul after the government in Afghanistan collapsed, bringing to a swift end almost 20 years of a US-led coalition's presence in the country.
Even as the pilot prepared for landing, air traffic controllers told them to hold in the air, without giving any reasons.

I feel that the end result would have been the same no matter when we pulled out, 10 years ago or 10 years from now. We screwed up by not understanding the Taliban and beginning evacuation of those who aided us long before an official withdrawal date was announced.

The withdrawal of the United States military has turned into a political and human disaster... It was not a well thought out plan in my view, Chip and I fear for all Americans in Afghanistan as well as those Afghani's who worked with and for the United States... and the barbaric handling of those caught is unnerving... This is very sad for our Country, our Military, and the world...
