On September 2, 1944, future President George H. W. Bush bailed from a burning plane during a mission in the Pacific. His rescue by a submarine was caught on film. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and several Air Medals.

I bet many pilots who treaded water were never rescued. The seas and oceans are vast.

In this case they knew they were going after the radio relay site, so stationed a "lifeguard" sub specifically for that reason. Not so vast if you know where to look.
