Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "A Spiral Aurora over Iceland." I suspect that watching this aurora form over Selfoss, a town in southern Iceland on the banks of the Ölfusá river, was a little unnerving. Seen in August 2015, this display followed a change in the Earth's magnetic field (documented on spaceweatherlive.com) that made it easier for the solar wind to penetrate the atmosphere at both the North and South pole. The dates (August 27-28, 2015) would be consistent with the history provided for this photo. This picture was the APOD nearly six years ago on September 15, 2015, when we were entering a solar minimum. Now that our Sun is returning to a solar maximum, further displays such as this one may be on all of our horizons.

Thank you my space exploration and NASA photography advocate friend Maj William W. 'Bill' Price for posting the the Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for Sunday, September 12, 2021 entitled ""A Spiral Aurora over Iceland."

This is a magnificent 6-year-old image. Much more recent than the 10,000 light year away [10,000 year old] images of sections of God's creation in the heavenlies.

APOD background
"Explanation: What's happened to the sky? Aurora! Captured in 2015, this aurora was noted by Icelanders for its great brightness and quick development. The aurora resulted from a solar storm, with high energy particles bursting out from the Sun and through a crack in Earth's protective magnetosphere a few days later. Although a spiral pattern can be discerned, creative humans might imagine the complex glow as an atmospheric apparition of any number of common icons. In the foreground of the featured image is the Ölfusá River while the lights illuminate a bridge in Selfoss City. Just beyond the low clouds is a nearly full Moon. The liveliness of the Sun -- and likely the resulting auroras on Earth -- is slowly increasing as the Sun emerges from a Solar minimum, a historically quiet period in its 11-year cycle.'
