APOD: 2021 September 14 - Mars Panorama 360 from Curiosity

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Mars Panorama 260 from Curiosity." My eyes first followed the gray sands near the rover and off into the distance. Then I examined the layered hill on the right, and the rocky hill on the left. Even in most deserts on Earth, something grows. But not here. What a desolate, yet fascinating place. I bet there are some people at NASA and JPL that really love their jobs.

"Explanation: Which way up Mount Sharp? In early September, the robotic rover Curiosity continued its ascent up the central peak of Gale Crater, searching for more clues about ancient water and further evidence that Mars could once have been capable of supporting life. On this recent Martian morning, before exploratory drilling, the rolling rover took this 360-degree panorama, in part to help Curiosity's human team back on Earth access the landscape and chart possible future routes. In the horizontally-compressed featured image, an amazing vista across Mars was captured, complete with layered hills, red rocky ground, gray drifting sand, and a dusty atmosphere. The hill just left of center has been dubbed Maria Gordon Notch in honor of a famous Scottish geologist. The current plan is to direct Curiosity to approach, study, and pass just to the right of Gordon Notch on its exploratory trek.'

Good morning, Maj William W. 'Bill' Price and thank you once again for an amazing APOD... I was, however, puzzled by the browned out Curiosity rover within the beautiful, yet desolate panorama...

As an adjunct to this image of Mount Sharp, I found a short NASA Video with more information about Mount Sharp, which included a short narration, which I believe adds some significant data, which I believe your followers will enjoy...

Sgt (Join to see) My guess is that in the overall mosaic, someone decided to not include frames where the rover itself comprised most of the image. <shrug> Each data bit coming back from Mars has a cost.

Maj William W. 'Bill' Price -I agree as to cost, but I do not believe that to be the case here since someone would have to be editing as Curiosity was transmitting the data... As a long time video creator/editor, I know that this was done after the fact not before it, Bill.
