I look forward to the day where we can actually mine them and use off world resources. Probably not a possibility for another 75 to 100 years, but then I thought that about commercial space flights for civilians and we are already seeing that. Sending people to Mars in 10 to 20 years, never thought I would see that in my lifetime either. I just hope we don't forget that we are explorers first and not politicians.

I agree with you about being Explorers first and NOT POLITICIANS, who seem to screw up everything technical that they get involved with...

Most interesting Sgt (Join to see). I can just imagine the precious metals that might exist on such a world!

Yes, indeed, CWO3 Dennis M. I can as well... As we use up our precious metals on Earth, we will need to replace them and mining asteroids might be what we do...

Sgt (Join to see) - What we need to do is build a space ship that is nothing But a huge Electron magnet, fly it to such an asteroid and drag it back to earth for us to mine. I am sure there must be a a lot of iron on that beast or beasts like it! Any precious metals would be gravy.

CWO3 Dennis M. - The energy required fot that would be well beyond what is possible, and it would have to be mostly iron ore. It would make more sens to break it up and process it in space with electric refining to remove most of the impurities. It may also be possible to use mirrors to concentrate the sun's energy to do a small but continuous refining process, if the fragments are small enough. I grew up in a steel producing town, and there was a constant stream or ore haulers passing my house every four hours. They made a very loud THUMP, when they crossed some train tracks a few blocks away. It could wake you up, if you were in a light sleep.
To build large space stations, it would make more sense to make as many parts as possible in space rather than taking it to earth and then back into space.

Sgt (Join to see) - One of my uncles in Kentucky owned a quarry and it was called Acme crushed stone. That was over 50 years ago, and it has a different name now. :)
