Not sure how it is in the Army, but I recall when I went to Staff Non-Commissioned Officer school (SNCO Academy) as a PME requirement, they spent an inordinate amount of time talking about FITREPs and Reporting Senior profiles, etc. etc. that I felt could have been put to better use on other topics... like the importance of SEAD, RSO&I, the role of integrating forces, componetcy, or any number of topics. The numerous FITREP discussions seemed counter productive, somewhat self-serving and oriented on the type of careerism Col David Hackworth talks about in his book "About Face". (Which I had read not to long before entering the academy). Though, to be fair, they had just implemented a new FITREP reporting process to avoid the over-inflation of the previous system. I don't think they had much success in that regard.

I didn't have any control over my Reporting Senior when I was cut orders to a unit. And when they would ask me about FITREPs I told them my only expectation was to get rated fairly. That I would be the same guy working to the best of my abilities before and after a FITREP - not because the RS demanded it of me, but because I demanded it of myself. If the first time I am hearing about a problem is on my FITREP, then that is on my RS. This was pretty much my line of conversation with any RS I worked with or for.

Different perspective maybe, but it worked out for me. Never had a problem.
