PO1 William "Chip" Nagel Although I understand the logic because of all the spam calls today. I would think if you were lost you would be glad to take any phone call on the chance that it would bring help to you.

..."In a follow-up comment, the rescue team urged people to treat the hiker's plight with respect.
"What seems like common sense in hindsight is not obvious to a subject in the moment when they are lost and panicking. In Colorado, most folks who spend time outdoors have a good understanding of the SAR infrastructure that is there to help them, but this is not the case nation-wide."...

This example does go a long way in explaining Darwins Theory of Natural Selection. It might go something like this. "911 this is a hiker confused and lost on the Donner Pass trail. Can you help me find my way back to the trail head I left 15 minutes ago? Yeh I left my water and lunch in my back pack on the front seat.... Hey wait just a minute, I know I dialed your number and everthing but how do I know that you are you....I mean 911? How do I know that you can help me? Do you hike these trails too? What if you are just saying that so I get more lost. How do you spell 911 if you are so smart huh fella? Wow you did spell that 911 awful fast............ok but don't try anything stupid okay?

Maybe I should take a step back and say I apologise for making light of the hiker's plight. Panic sets in and then the amount of mistakes a normal person would make multiplies.....please forgive me!

SFC Jim Ruether - I Think He Survived so He is Fair Game to Bust His Chops about it. Also He was Honest and Explained His "Logic" or Lack thereof. Hopefully Others will Learn from His Experience.
